Our Story

From Family Fields to Global Flavors:
Thee Green Cave Spices Journey

Nestled in the verdant hills of Numunukula in Sri Lanka’s breathtaking Central Highlands, Green Cave began as a humble cardamom estate, lovingly nurtured by my father and passed down to me in 2018. Since its founding in 1978, our family has dedicated three generations to cultivating cardamom and other premium spices, delivering exceptional quality to local markets In 2006, my father, Mr. MB Herath a retired police officer formalized the venture as Green Cave Products, bringing high quality, value added spices to the retail market. With our evolution into Green Cave Spices (Pvt) Ltd in 2020 and the addition of new partners, we expanded our vision: to offer a refined range of spices for high-end and international markets

Where It All Began

My great-grandfather, Mr. Dingiri Banda, began his cardamom plantation in Hunasgiriya, an area nestled within the renowned Knuckles Mountain Range in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. His dedication to cultivating cardamom laid the foundation for a family tradition that would continue for generations.

The Roots of Green Cave

In 1978, my father, Mr. Muthu Banda Herath, carried this tradition forward by establishing a 20-acre cardamom plantation in Namunukula. He named the estate Green Cave Estate, situated amidst the Pingarawa Tea Plantation in the hills of Sri Lanka. It was the beginning of the Green Cave legacy.

From Cultivation to Value Addition

Over the years, my father focused on enhancing the value of the cardamom cultivated at Green Cave Estate. He gradually expanded beyond cardamom to include other premium spices, particularly cloves and black pepper. In 2006, he began taking our carefully selected, hand-picked, and value-added spices beyond the estate and into wider markets, marking an important step in the evolution of our family business.

From Roots to Revival

After dedicating 40 years of service as an Assistant Superintendent of Police, my father passed the Green Cave Estate and business on to me and my wife in 2018. Taking forward the foundation he had built, we began expanding our product range and developing new value-added spice products, including products that are uniquely associated with the Green Cave brand.
